The Applications of Silicone Sealant in Building Energy Efficiency

In building energy efficiency, the main focus is on improving the insulation performance of the building envelope structure; Among the several important components of building envelope structures, the insulation performance of curtain walls and doors and windows is the worst. These two aspects are important factors affecting indoor temperature and building energy efficiency. Therefore, improving the insulation performance of doors, windows, and curtain walls has become an important direction for building energy efficiency.

In terms of energy conservation for doors and windows, the main goal is to reduce the heat transfer of the glass to achieve insulation. This ability mainly relies on the sealing performance of doors and windows, and in ensuring sealing, sealant is of utmost importance.

Silicone sealant plays a very important role in construction, with its core applications mainly in three aspects:

① The second sealing structure of hollow sealed glass

② The structure of the curtain wall

③ Weather resistant seals and waterproof weather resistant seals for doors and windows.

So, it can be seen that silicone adhesive is very important. The quality of silicone adhesive not only affects the energy-saving effect of the entire building structure, but also affects the safety performance of the overall curtain wall structure.

Insulated glass units have outstanding thermal insulation properties and are important materials for improving the energy-saving level of doors and windows. In recent years, they have been widely used in construction. The dry gas inside the insulating glass makes it have functions such as sound insulation, heat insulation, anti condensation, reducing cold radiation, and enhancing glass safety.

In the common insulated glass structures we use in daily life, butyl glue and silicone glue are usually used in combination. Butyl glue is used as the first sealant to ensure sealing and low permeability, while silicone glue is used as the second sealant to ensure the stability and integrity of the glass unit structure.

The sealing performance and lifespan of insulating glass mainly rely on the sealing structure, and excellent edge sealants such as silicone sealant must meet the following requirements:

1. Long lasting resistance to environmental factors, especially heat, water or moisture, and ultraviolet radiation;

2. Sufficient structural strength to withstand displacement, minimizing changes in the first sealing adhesive vapor channel;

3. Low water vapor and gas permeability under usage conditions.
